This week Chris from BackpackerBanter.com fills us in on his #EpicMoments. We were really keen to chat to Chris after following his journey into the depths of free diving, as well as picking up a few surf tips along the way.
1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your blog
I’m Chris – a surfer, photographer and traveller from Devon in the UK. My site – BackpackerBanter.com – feature reviews advice and stories from my long-term backpacker travels…everything from how much it costs for a month in Thailand through to my worst backpacker moments! I’ve been on the road for over 2 years now so it’s got a good mix of everything – whether you’re simply looking for a distraction from work, some inspiration to travel or some help with your plans.
2) What’s been your most epic travel moment?
Hmmm…that’s a tough one as I’ve ticked a lot off my bucket list in the last few years! Swimming with whale sharks in Thailand is one that quickly springs to mind, they’re such amazing creatures. Truly epic moment though? I think buying a van in Australia and living in it for a year was my ultimate highlight. I’d dreamt about it for years and when it finally happened it was everything I ever hoped for – opening the boot overlooking beautiful surf, cooking BBQs on the back and conveying with heaps of fellow backpackers! Other than that my remaining top 5 would be learning to free dive (one of the most incredible and beautiful sports you’ll ever try!), hiking the inca trail (a must if you’re in south america) and joining a surf charter in Indonesia…a surfing right of passage!
3) Where do you hope to travel to in 2014?
Well the start of 2014 is very much a slow affair – I’m spending 3 months in Ecuador followed by a few weeks in Peru and then it looks like I’m surf coaching in Europe for a good chunk of summer. I’m really stoked to hopefully get to the Philippines towards the end of the year though, it’s been on my to do list for far too long now…and then hopefully get around to my working holiday visa in NZ at some point…but that’s more 2015 now I think!
4) And what activities would you like to do?
I can’t wait to head out there for 3 of my favourite things – surfing, free diving and scuba diving. The Philippines has a great mix of all three so I’m pencilling in some serious time and budget for there! General travel wise though I’m just hoping to meet a heap of amazing people, embrace the unexpected and see where the journey takes me.
5) If you could recommend one activity, what would it be?
Learn to Surf! I’m slightly bias as a surf instructor but surfing has literally changed my life and I wouldn’t be who I am and where I am without it. Travel and surf go hand in hand too! My recommendation – learn in Byron Bay, Australia…it’s my favourite place on the planet at the moment with it’s perfect balance of surfing, partying and good backpacking vibes!
