Those of you planning to go on safari next year are in for a real treat. I’ve only been on safari once, but we were fortunate enough to see a whole host of wild animals, it really is an experience that you’ll never forget. If you’re planning on going on safari, it’s critical that you pack the right items in your suitcase. It is not always easy to find shops that sell essentials when you are in the middle of the countryside. So here’s a list to make sure you don’t forget anything important.
Maps of the country
You are relatively safe when booking a safari through a company you recognise. However, there is still a small chance that you might get lost. If that happens, you will probably need to call for help. Even so, there might be instances in which you can navigate your way out of trouble. Keeping a map of the country’s road system in your bag is always a good idea. At least then you can move in the right direction until help arrives.
Calling your friends and family while away on safari should be a top priority. Most of them will worry about your well-being, and so you can put their mind at ease. Also, you never know when you will find yourself in an emergency situation. So, keep a satellite phone in your pocket at all times. That is especially important if you are visiting war-torn countries. Thankfully, you don’t have to purchase one outright. There are companies that allow you to lease a satellite phone for little expense.
Medication / Vaccines
You want your safari to be a life-changing adventure. However, you need to make sure it is a positive change. The last thing you want to do is come home with a severe illness. Likewise, forgetting your medication could mean you become very ill. Make sure you pack all your prescribed drugs before you leave home. Also, visit your doctor and ask if you need vaccinations. In some instances, they might provide you with extra supplies if you are visiting dangerous areas.
It would be a real tragedy if you booked a luxury safari in Tanzania, and the organisers could find no proof. Travelling all that way for nothing would leave a sour taste in your mouth. So, it’s useful to print your booking confirmations and take them along.
Hopefully this list will give you a few ideas of what to pack for a safari. Now all you need to worry about is spotting your favourite animals…
