Go Abroad This Winter

It’s time to face the truth – summer is over. It’s not going to get any warmer from here on out and this cold I’m suffering from is certainly reminding me that winter is drawing near. We will soon have to get out our jumpers and our wooly socks. But for some people, this is good news. If you love winter, you’re probably looking forward to the colder weather. Even if you don’t enjoy it at home, there are lots of ways you can cheer yourself up by going away. Skiing might be the traditional winter holiday. But there’s much more you can do to escape the dreary British winter so perhaps you should go abroad this winter?!

Skiing and Snowboarding

If you want to stick with tried and tested methods, spending your winter holiday doing some snowsports is always a fun option. Of course, you don’t have to go hurtling down the side of a mountain if you don’t want to. There are other ways to enjoy the snow. You can go snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or just for a hike where there’s a clear path. Or if you would rather not get active at all, you can always relax in a hot tub or spend your time at a spa. And who says you need to ski first to have après-ski drinks? There are lots of places you can go to as well, from the French Alps to the Canadian Rockies.

If you’re looking for an adventure, there are other ways to do it apart from skiing. Winter offers some amazing landscapes and natural wonders for you to explore. For example, you have a much higher chance of seeing the Northern Lights in the winter months. You could go in search of them in Lapland or Iceland, as well as other destinations. Or what about a glacier hike or climb? In many places, the glacier will melt away in the spring, so you have to take your chance while it’s cold enough. If you have a need for speed, there are many places where you can hire a snowmobile to travel around.

Winter Sun

But what if you hate the cold? Then what you need is a winter escape. Luckily, the whole world doesn’t experience winter at the same time. That’s why so many birds fly south, and you should too. There are some incredible places you can visit if you want to soak up some rays. Of course, many colder countries get plenty of sun, but you want the warmth too. Australia and the Pacific are some of the most popular places to visit to get away from the winter chill. But look beyond Australia and New Zealand at places like Samoa, Fiji, and Kiribati. Before you leave, make sure you visit the London Travel Clinic for any vaccinations. There might be both required and recommended vaccinations that you should have.

Christmas Day Abroad

A lot of people are hesitant to mix up their Christmas Day. They often do the same thing every year, and it may be a rare chance to see all the family. But Christmas will change as your family does, and remember that it does come around every year. If you feel like trying something different, being on holiday at Christmas could be a fun experience. We’ve been lucky enough to experience Christmas in Roatan, Honduras and Bali, Indonesia, and this year we hope to spend it in Colombia! The great thing about it is that you can see how other cultures and countries celebrate Christmas. In some places, where Christianity isn’t a dominant religion, Christmas can be a chance to celebrate with friends. Other countries have quirky Christmas traditions that you might never have seen before.

New Year’s Eve Party

If you’re not keen on having Christmas away from home, then how about New Year’s Eve? Most people use it as an opportunity to have a party, so why not see how they do it all over the world? It will be interesting celebrating in a different time zone too! Lots of cities and countries around the world have their own New Year’s Eve traditions, and it would be fun to experience some of them. You could watch the ball drop in New York’s Times Square or eat twelve grapes at midnight in Spain. Following a tradition with some of the locals could be a lot of fun and cheer you up if you’re missing home.

If winter gets you down, don’t stay stuck at home for the whole season. There are lots of ways you can get out there and enjoy what the world has to offer.
