Santorini: A Jewel In The Mediterranean Crown

In the last few years, there’s been a lot of interest in creating travel bucket lists. Many of us have probably spent too much time daydreaming about our next holiday destination, and planning the fantasy trip of a lifetime. The truth is that often, the beauty and wonder of places can be exaggerated. But that’s not the case with Santorini. No amount of research can tarnish the real life experience of seeing this tiny sparkling island bobbing about in the clear blue sea. With Santorini, there’s no risk of disappointment. All the photos in the world can’t prepare you for this dazzling little Mediterranean gem.

Why choose Santorini?

When you land in Santorini you’ll know that you made the right choice of holiday destination. The tranquil azure waters and whitewashed houses make for stunning views. There’s also a unique atmosphere, which is hard to describe on paper. The locals are incredibly friendly, and visitors seem constantly enchanted by their surroundings.

Santorini has something for everyone. It’s an ideal spot for a romantic retreat for couples. It’s laid back, safe and offers all the amenities you could wish for on a family holiday. It’s tranquil for those looking for a well-earned rest. You can laze around all day if you wish to, or get your tan on at the rugged, yet beautiful beaches. Discover the fascinating history of the Cyclades Islands and the mystery of ancient myths. Book a budget guest house, or escape the madding crowds and look for stunning Santorini villas.

Santorini, like many Greek Islands, is famed for its food and drink. You can happily while away entire afternoons enjoying meze and some locally-produced wines. As the sun sets, book an enviable al fresco spot at a hilltop restaurant and enjoy some of the most dazzling views you’re ever likely to see.

Every day of your Santorini holiday will be a highlight, but there are some must-sees when it comes to planning your itinerary. The hilltop paradise of Oia is a tourist trap, which merits its reputation as one of Greece’s most beautiful villages. Here, you’ll see the whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches in all their glory. Visit the artisan galleries and take a tour around the souvenir shops. Try and aim for dusk, if you fancy a little more time and space to yourself.

If you’re interested in Greek history and mythology, you’ll be enthralled by Akrotiri, a Minoan site, which dates back to the Bronze Age.

At the bottom of the imposing cliffs lie secluded beaches, perfect for topping up your tan and recharging your batteries. The Red Beach is the most famous and popular stretch. Named after the bright red rocks that form its dramatic backdrop, you can enjoy bath-like water temperatures here. The beach is mainly made from black pebbles. For sandy beaches, head to Kamari or Perissa.

If you’re searching for inspiration for your next overseas adventure, why not consider Santorini? This beautiful island has so much to offer. Breathtaking views, long lazy days at the beach and ancient history and intrigue make for a truly unforgettable holiday.

Such a dreamy place! My favorite Santorini experience has to be exploring the beautiful villages and panoramic caldera view as I embark on 8-hour hiking from Fira to Oia. It’s supposed to be completed in just 3 hours, but I stopped a lot because of all the gorgeous views!
