Are you thinking of going on an adventure? One of the best kinds of travel adventure is a road trip, and the west coast of Portugal lends itself perfectly to it — especially if you like to ride the waves. Check out our ultimate Portugal road trip itinerary for some exploration of best towns, cities and waves.
Pop your surfboards in your camper van for this one because, as you travel down the west coast of the country, you’ll find that you want to catch a few waves along the way. Starting off in Porto, the route continues right down to Faro, which is the blissful, beautiful capital of the Algarve and also the finishing point of the route.
Cram your first waves in half way between Porto and Lisbon by driving south from Porto down to Figueira da Foz, which has a wide beach and plenty of bars to reward yourself with a cold beer after all that exertion! The next port of call is the surf town of Peniche, which is something of an elite town in the surfing world. Part of the Medão Grande beach is also known as ‘Supertubos’ because of the large tubular waves. Nice!
Further south is the town of Ericeira. If you in the right place at the right time, you’ll catch a round of the ASP World Tour Championship. Move on to the pretty town of Cascais, which is home to the posh beach of Praia do Guincho.
From there it’s the big one, Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, and there are beaches if you want to hit them, such as Carcavelos and Costa da Caparica, but you should also take a non-surf timeout to make the most of the city. Stop for some of Lisbon’s legendary pastel de Belém and step back in time with a ride on its antiquated but endearing tram network.
Continue further south through the south-western port of Sagres and to Portimão. Praia da Rocha, in Portimão, is one of the best-known, upcoming surf regions in the Algarve. After catching a few waves there, drive on to the final stop on the route, Faro. Take some time out from the surfing and board a ferry over to the gorgeous Ilha Deserta to relax on the beach, or stay on the mainland and explore old town Faro.
The lovely towns in this part of the Western Mediterranean region make a road trip an enthralling way to spend your Portugal holidays. Grab your surfboard, fill up the petrol tank and get out and explore this beautiful country.
