Recently there has been a boom in immersive theatre, particularly in the capital where this has proved to be a big money… if executed correctly. Since we’ve settled in East London we’ve been fascinated with new phenomenon and how the British culture is moving towards more hand on experiences rather than simply watching a film at the cinema or eating dinner at home. But with so much going, the next question is, how to choose where to go?! Well we’ve done the ‘hard work’ for you and trawled the city in a hunt for the top immersive experiences on offer…
1. Time Run: The Escape Room Adventure
This is a 60 minute quest through the ages to solve puzzles within your team of 3 to 5 people. The mission is to use your ingenuity to obtain the ‘Lance of Longinus’ after diving through a time portal. Think Indian Jones crossed with Crystal Maze and you’ll end up at Time Run. It will suit games, explorers, critical thinkers and the like in this new live-gaming concept.
Deemed by Harpers Bazaar as ‘“The best, most exciting escape room experience in London right now, 5 out of 5 stars.”
Situated next to London Fields, tickets range from £24 per person to £33 per person during peak times. To find out more click here.
2. Goosebumps Alive
Are you ready to journey into the underground world of Waterloo with the immersive stage adaptation of R.L Stine’s spine-tingling Goosebumps?! Walking through ‘Graffiti Tunnel’ to the entrance of The Vaults theatre is an experience in itself, feel the suspense lingering before you’re even inside the building!
The only way out is through 17 rooms, all of which encapsulate the shadows present in your darkest dreams. Meet a killer scarecrow, face the haunted mask, escape from a deranged scientist, or be buried alive—or will you find the real horror lurking deep inside your head? Our particular favourite was the freak show, and we have to say hats off to the production team for some of the incredible costumes and props created for this show.
Interestingly, it has been divided into two shows, Goosebumps Alive is the adults versions and Goosebumps Kids is designed for ages 5-11. A smart move to capture audiences old and new and who knows, it might create a Goosebumps revival! Goosebumps Kids is running til 5th June, tickets start at £16.50 and can be arranged here.
3. 28 Days Later
The ever-popular Secret Cinema have brought one of the UK’s best horror films, ’28 Days Later’ to life in an old print works in South East London. This fully immersive experience will take you head first straight into a post-apocalyptic world where you’ll need to fight for survival or succumb to the infected!
Without giving away too much, this 5 hours long experience has a number of highlights, apart form the obvious heart racing sprints around an abandoned warehouse, you’ll be highly entertained in the rave bar and can indulge in a cocktail or three during the event!
This one comes highly recommended from us. Tickets start at £59.40 and you’ll need to take a card with you for all the extras (no cash is accepted on site). There’s only a few more days left to be chased by zombies so don’t delay… Get your tickets here.
Enjoy The Journey has attended all of these events and these are personal recommendations.
